Marty Kirschen (founder and editor) ...
Living in the Los Angeles area, I turned to teaching fourteen years
ago after a career as an executive in the television industry. I
did my work for my Special Education credential at Cal
State Los Angeles. I am teaching at an elementary school in the San Fernando Valley for Los Angeles Unified School District. The children in the class I
teach have moderate to severe disabilities. I have a long term goal to become
an inclusion specialist.
Caring, bringing warmth, patience, and understanding enhances the
beauty and meaning of our work. When teaching I feel happy when
I see a smile on a child's face and unhappy when I see a sad child.
I also believe that when a child is feeling good, he or she learns
much more easily. These tools I try to provide helps him or her
feel, get along and learn better.
I have had the good fortune to learn in the last few
years of the work of people who believe there is a connection between
caring and competence. I have also had the good fortune to take
part in a number of conferences as well as smaller self-help gatherings.
We all have a wonderful opportunity to learn from ourselves, the
teacher next door and others. By way of our website and newsletter
I hope we can enhance the caring we do through what we learn. To
quote the Deja.com teachers website. "Share what you know, learn
what you don't."

Diane Lightbody - contributing editor
Diane Lightbody and I became good friends during our elementary
school years. We became reacquainted in Dallas as young adults during
college in the 60's. And now, later in our lives, much wiser and
more inspired than before, we decided to collaborate in matters
regarding our collective love of the human spirit. Diane is a Certified
Rehabilitation Counselor.
Formerly, her work was with patients, who were in
the acute and chronic state of rehabilitation. Her emphasis was
to focus upon their psychological adjustment to traumatic disability.
Her areas of expertise and research are Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
and Identity Formation. This past year, she taught 7th and 8th grade
Special Education students in Duncanville, Texas.
