Social and Emotional learning:
Building Heart, Spirit & Community in Schools -

April 19-21, 2002 Shoreline Community Center, Seattle WA
Also, here is the website to link to the PassageWays Institute: http://www.mediatorsfoundation.org/isel/index.html
Experience renewal at this weekend institute for teacher
on building heart, spirit, and community in the classroom.
Cosponsored by The Heritage Institute (Seattle, WA) and
the PassageWays Institute (Boulder, CO), this exceptional
event will be facilitated by Rachael Kessler, a nationally-
known presenter and author of the ASCD-published book,
The Soul of Education: Helping Students Find Connection,
Compassion, and Character at School. In a retreat-like
setting, Ms. Kessler will help us explore:
The theory of social and emotional learning (SEL)
The integration of play, ritual, stillness, expressive
arts and community building
How to develop your own reflectiveness and teaching
presence
How to help students focus, increase their motivation
to learn, create caring in the classroom, and develop
empathy and compassion.
Stages of group development and methods appropriate
to each. Importantly, methods learned from this institute
can be integrated in any K-12 classroom, and do not
represent "something else" to teach, but a heartfelt way
to breath new life into what you are already doing.

2 ... a new feature on a website from Jonathan Cohen
Dear fellow learners and teachers,
The Center for Social and Emotional Education has launched a new
series of social emotional learning features on our
web site: www.csee.net
This month, Steven Tobias, Psy.D. talks about children developing an
emotional vocabulary. Steve is the co-author (with Maurice Elias and
Brian Friedlander) of two books on emotionally intelligent parenting.
These features will include a range of people talking about a given
social and/or emotional competency (what is it? Why is it important?
And, what can we do to promote it?) or concrete steps we can talk to
further effective social emotional education in our schools. Upcoming
features include Ray Pasi, Ph.D. (school principal and author of
Greater Expectations: Promoting SEL and Higher Achievement in your
School); David Schonfeld, MD (pediatrician and a faculty member
at
Yales National Center for Children Exposed to Violence) talking
about
creating safe schools; Anna Weselak (from the National PTA) talking
about strategies that further substantive home-school partnerships and
many more!
I hope you will let us know what kinds of future features would be most
useful to you!
Sincerely,
Jonathan Cohen, Ph.D.

Saturday, March 23, 2002 Issue 1 VOLUME 1 ISSUE 1CONTENTS include ...
Best Practice: Establish a "No Putdown Rule"
in your classroom.
Given a teacher's inability to know how each student
will react to sarcastic humor, a "no putdown" rule
can save a lot of heartache and, at the same time,
create the foundation for a caring inclusive classroom
community.
4 ... an announcement from Andrea Schuver
Week of the Young Child Begins April 7
The Parenting Project has placed a banner on our homepage for The Week
of the Young Child. This week will recognize that children's
opportunities are adults' responsibilities. It is a time to recommit
ourselves to ensuring that each and every child experiences the type of
early environment at home, at child care, at school, and in the
community that will promote their early learning. Preparing all of
tomorrow's parents as they grow up is a key step toward making this
vision a reality.
For more information, see National Association for the Education of
Young Children at http://www.naeyc.org/woyc/default.asp
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Parenting Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing
parenting, nurturing and relationship skills education to all children
and teens to improve the quality of parenting in the next generation
while creating caring classroom environments that facilitate learning
today. Through identifying and promoting programs, inspiring efforts,
advising proponents, and providing resources and public education, The
Parenting Project works toward a society in which every child is well
nurtured and parenting is a valued occupation undertaken only by
prepared adults.

4. June 20, 2002 update - Summer 2002 Conferences and Workshops
A listing of people and organizations providing talks, workshops and conferences
regarding aspects of caring is shown below. Below our basic list and links
is more extensive information on these gatherings. You can scroll to the
area you wish.
The summer is a good time for reflection and personal growth ... and
a good time to consider going to a workshop or conference or talk ...
reading a meaningful book, traveling, and more. Any sharings you wish
for us to pass on is most welcome. All the happenings below are worth
perusing.
Recently, I have had conversations with Jonathan Cohen, the Co-Founder
for The Center for Social and Emotional Education located in New York
City. He has shared about the works they are doing, particularly following
the September 11 tragedies. It would be nice if you can give some particular
attention to his site and its activities at this time (note the third
listing below). I know that along with the conference information, the
Center for Social and Emotional Education has begun a series of "monthly
spotlights," that focus on various forms of caring practices such
as listening, building empathy and more. You can see a listing of the
ones that have been on the site already ... http://www.csee.net/spotlight/archives/
If you are aware of other organizations we can add to our calendar -
nationally, regionally, internationally - we would be interested in learning
about them. If anyone would like to help us keep this listing more current,
we can work towards putting it out in a more current fashion. Also there
are a number of organizations who do not have workshops, but bring workshops
to your school or organization on a requested basis. We would like to
provide that listing as well and if there are people who would like to
help us put that list together, this would be most appreciated.
Kind regards,
Marty Kirschen, editor

How Can We Create Safe, Caring and Responsive Schools
In the Aftermath of September 11?
Leading Experts Discuss How to Establish Effective Social and Emotional
Learning Programs in Our Classrooms at National Summer Institute New York,
New York May 16, 2002 The Center for Social and Emotional
Education (CSEE) will hold its sixth annual summer institute Educating
Minds and Hearts: Safe Schools, Healthy Character Development, Academic
Success and Social-Emotional Education on July 9-12 at The Graduate
Center of the City University of New York.
The Institute is co-sponsored by The Continuing Education and Public Programs
at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York; Nassau County
BOCES; The American School Counselor Association; and The New York State
Center for School Safety.
The attack on America last September has created a heightened concern
for determining how to develop safe, caring and responsive schools for
our children. In response to growing public anxiety and renewed professional
interest, renowned experts in social emotional education will join together
for a national summer institute to discuss how to establish effective,
quality Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and Character Education programs
in our classrooms.
Parents, educators and mental health professionals from around the world
are expected to attend the Institute that will address such topics as
creating safe learning environments; understanding self- and emotional
awareness; developing problem solving and decision making skills; and
implementing effective SEL programs.
Members will have the opportunity to receive 2 credits for participation
in a Bank Street College of Education course (Social Emotional Education:
Core Principles and Practices) linked to the Institute.
This interdisciplinary conference will present the core principles
and practices for how parents, educators and administrators can work together
to make our schools and communities thoughtful centers for learning,
stated Jonathan Cohen, Ph.D., Co-founder and President of CSEE. We
should help our children to develop these invaluable life skills: to listen
themselves and others; to appreciate differences; and to solve problems
in nonviolent ways.
Some of the conference speakers and workshop leaders will include:
Maurice Elias, Ph.D. Professor of Psychology, Rutgers University;
Vice-Chairman, Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning
(CASEL)
Jonathan Cohen, Ph.D. Co-founder and President, CSEECSEEs
work on social and emotional growth has long been important and timely,
observed Howard Gardner, Ph.D., Harvard University. After September
11, 2001, it has become indispensable.

4) The Center for Teacher Formation
http://www.teacherformation.org/html/ctf/index.cfm
Formation Principles and Practices Retreat/Workshop
The Formation Principles and Practices Retreat/Workshop is for people
who want to experience a Courage to Teach retreat and expand their understanding
of the formation process, to learn more about how to create evocative
and trustworthy spaces for learning and reflection, and to bring greater
depth to the work they are already doing. This retreat/workshop is not
designed to prepare participants for leadership of a two-year CTT program,
but rather provides an introduction to formation principles and practices
and how they might be used in various settings within educational or related
institutions.
The first three days of the Formation Principles and Practices Retreat/Workshop
will have an experiential focus as participants come together in retreat
to experience the core principles and practices of teacher formation as
used in the Courage to Teach program. The last two days are designed to
explore how participants might use these principles and practices in their
own work--as part of professional development activities, in facilitating
Courage to Teach study circles, or in other short-term renewal work within
schools or related organizations. This program is open to educators from
all walks of education, and if there is room, to interested persons from
other professions as well.

http://www.mediatorsfoundation.org/isel/workshops.html
July 16-20, 2002 - University of Colorado in Boulder, CO
Introduction to Social and Emotional Learning
Professor Dan Liston and Rachael Kessler
This institute introduces teachers to the concepts and techniques that
form the foundation of emotional and social learning. Based on the work
of Daniel Goleman, CASEL (Collaborative for the Advancement of Social
and Emotional Learning) and the instructor's extensive experience in school
settings, we will explore how to renew your classroom environment with
strategies that promote community, emotional well-being and deeper engagement
of students in learning. Specifically, we'll cover:
* a theoretical framework which provides the rationale for emotional and
social learning, the basic principles of design and implementation, and
for spiritual development, including rites of passage
* stages of group development and methods appropriate to each stage
* methods for helping students develop learning readiness: focus, concentration,
listening and motivation to learn
* the use and integration of play, ritual, stillness, expressive arts
and community building techniques in designing and implementing an SEL
curriculum
* methods for working with stress and cultivating imagination and sensory
aliveness
* opportunities for reflection on the "teaching presence"--
the qualities to be cultivated and strengthened in teachers to safely
open the classroom to heart, soul and communityIn addition, some foundation
courses include: tools for managing anger and a whole person approach
to problem-solving skills.
The principles and methods learned in this institute can be integrated
into the teaching practice of all educators, grade levels K-12.

3. A Letter from Thea Maria, a friend from South Africa
who is doing work regarding HIV/AIDS
Dear Marty
I wrote to you over a year ago and told you that we were setting up an
a caring and empowerment programme for people living with HIV/AIDS.
You offered to let us put something onto your website and for many reasons
I never got around to doing much about it. Firstly, you had September
11th and I felt that all your contacts energies would be needed to assist
in the caring and healing that would be needed in the USA (even though
it was on the opposite coast - it affected all Americans - and the whole
world!). Secondly, I was very busy trying to organize things here. I moved
out of my house and had to knock down some walls and things so that it
could be turned into a training center. Then we had to set it all up and
organize and start running the programs. This has taken a great deal of
energy and a certain amount of money. Thirdly, I had intended waiting
until our website was up and running. But, as none of us has much knowledge
or experience of websites that bit is taking MUCH longer than I had ever
imagined. So, we can't wait for that anymore. We are trying to get someone
to help us with that and although we have the site, it doesn't really
function. I know how to care for people but don't have a clue about computers.
Rick, our Center Manager, is trying to source funding to have the website
maintained. I will attach a few pictures of our Center and some people
attending a workshop with this e-mail and can send you some on a regular
basis until we get the website working.
Last week I attended a function at the University of the Western Cape
where (ex) President Bill Clinton was the guest speaker and it was his
speech that really prompted me to write to you. The day that he spoke
to us he arrived an hour late as he had just done a live crossing to some
of the American networks for early morning television shows - perhaps
you saw it. He was doing a whirlwind tour of Africa and was absolutely
horrified at what he saw in terms of HIV/AIDS. Unfortunately, South Africa,
for all sorts of reasons, has the greatest number of HIV infections in
the world. We have over 5 million people infected with the virus which
amounts to 25% of our adult population. It is hard to believe, but 1 in
4 of our adults is infected and very little is available in terms of care.
Most people do not have access to medication and the discrimination and
stigma are enormous.
Now, to return to Clinton's speech: He said that he intended to return
to the First World and motivate for the Third World's debt to "written
off", as we would never be able to repay that loan, and try and improve
the lives of our people. The money that would thus be available would,
however, need to be secured for health and education. He continued to
say that the Developed World can't just stand by and watch the Developing
Countries falter and fail - they need to understand that we all belong
to the same earth and therefore are dependent upon each other. He said
all the things that made us feel that he wanted to help - let's hope it
happens. Similar things were said at the AIDS Conference in Vancouver
in 1996, Geneva in 1998, Durban in 2000 and Barcelona this year and nothing
much has materialized! President Clinton also said that we must not just
sit back and wait for things to happen but we must go out there and make
it happen - we must ask our friends, colleagues, associates and whoever
we can to help us change things here. So, that is why I am writing to
you and why I have asked Rick Stephen, our Center Manager, to write to
you and find out if there is any way that we can get some assistance from
some of the folks over there who care about other people. He will let
you know about the programs that we run to teach Lifeskills and to Empower
people with AIDS. Our biggest problem is that 50% of the HIV infections
are happening in the youth between the ages of 15 and 24 years, and that
is the future of our country! Our Government is only prepared to spend
money on Prevention Campaigns and while that is obviously essential, there
is not much point in focusing entirely on prevention and doing nothing
about CARE.
That was the reason that we started our Non-Profit Organization "SIYAKHANA"
which means "Building each other". We have managed to secure
a bit of funding from the Cape Town City Council and that plus what we
put in ourselves has kept us going so far, but that won't last much longer.
I am writing to ask you if you have any ideas of where we might be able
to secure some funding to continue running this project - either a large
organization or perhaps individuals who might be prepared to put a small
monthly donation to Siyakhana. In return for "Adopting an HIV/AIDS
Lifeskills Project" we will keep them informed and updated about
what is happening at our center and in the community.
Now that I have kept you occupied for some time reading this, I am going
to leave you to think about it and await your thoughts on the matter.
Let me know what you think.
Fond regards
Thea
