1. Welcome to this page
With the addition of this page, we are fine tuning the "Lessons"
and "Community" sections of our website. There is a form of
teaching called "Service Learning," where students learn by
going out into the community to do caring work. This form of service learning
includes the going to an old age home and playing checkers with the residents
... and then some. The "and then some," is where a service learning
endeavor is thought about, planned, worked on and reflected on again.
An early example I learned about was a project where students in a middle
school realized how big and intimidating the transition from elementary
to middle school can be. So they decided to come up with an introductory
brochure for graduating fifth graders. This brochure would be given to
the fifth graders prior to taking them on a tour.
To date we have only one article on Service learning on our site. While
the article has good insight, the link is no longer active. Therefore,
along with that article on the Calvert County Maryland Middle Schools,
we have added two links below that will give more of an introduction to
service learning. We are most interested to learn about your experiences
and referrals in this area.
